Frequently Asked Questions

I am very happy to answer your questions on the telephone but here are a few frequently asked questions with their answers to get you started.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state and we all experience it at least once a day, if not more.  Have you ever been so engrossed in a task, reading a book, watching a TV show or maybe driving your car ‘on autopilot’?  Maybe you are a day dreamer, or tend to ruminate about past events?  All of these activities put you into an altered state of consciousness and are the same as hypnosis in terms of what is happening to your brainwaves.

Hypnosis is something that you do to yourself.  The hypnotist is simply a guide to help you get there.  When you are in the hypnotic state you are open to suggestion and this is where the therapy comes in.

Why should I use hypnosis, can I not just use my own willpower?

Willpower is a funny thing.  How often have you decided to do something that seemed important to you and then not followed through?  Something ‘just came up’ to divert you.  Maybe you just couldn’t be bothered that day, you’ll do it next week.  Or the week after…

This happens because your conscious mind is not aligned to your subconscious mind on that particular thing you are trying to achieve.  The conscious mind controls rational thought about things that are happening now.  Anything you need to retain for longer term use is passed into your unconscious for safe keeping.  The unconscious controls everything else.  Automatic functions in your body eg heart beat, digestion, breathing etc and how you are feeling.  This is something from our prehistoric past that keeps us safe.  The unconscious likes to keep things the same if there is no danger to deal with.  It is the keeper of your emotions and will communicate through them to your conscious mind.  Generally speaking, most people make decisions based on their emotions.  Even if you have done all the logic around something, eg which car to buy.  You will have weighed up all the features, price, colour etc using your conscious mind.  But how do you make that final choice?  What makes you pick that one?  I’ll wager its because it ‘just felt right’.  So who’s really in charge?  Conscious or unconscious?

Hypnotherapy allows us to communicate directly with your unconscious mind.  Your conscious mind gets to take a back seat so we can get to work on gaining alignment and acceptance from your unconscious.  Once we do this the unconscious mind will stop throwing up barriers to the change you want to make.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session?

In your first session we will talk about your requirements and I will take a case history and notes about your personal details including any relevant medical information.  If you are happy to, we will do some hypnotherapy at the end of this session to prepare you for your treatment going forward.  Between this and the next appointment I will prepare a treatment plan and set up your personalised scripts.  From there on in, we will discuss progress and carry out the treatments at future sessions.

How many sessions will I need?

This really depends on how you progress and the type of help you are requiring.  I suggest to most clients that they budget for 3-4 sessions for most issues.  We will review progress in each session to see how you are doing and what you are happy to continue with if necessary.  You will be given recordings for your personal use at home in between sessions to help embed your therapy.

Please note that Stop Smoking is different and conducted as a single session treatment that lasts around 2 hours including taking your case history.

Will I lose control?

No.  At all times you are in control.  Hypnosis does not occur unless you want it to.  You are still aware of what is happening and what is being said to you, although sometimes you won’t remember it all when you return to normal consciousness.  This can be because we planned it and built that into your treatment or can occur naturally.  It really doesn’t matter either way, your therapy will still work whether you consciously remember everything that was said or not.  Your subconscious mind will retain it all and get to work for you.

What if I reveal something I don’t want to?

The short answer is that you won’t.  Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness but you are still in control and you cannot be made to do anything that you don’t want to.  You may have seen what occurs in the stage shows on TV where people are made to act like chickens, or do silly things, but this is not at all like hypnotherapy.  I provide a respectful service to my clients and adhere to a code of ethics as part of the conditions of registration with my professional bodies.

What if I don’t wake up?

This is highly unlikely and will be because you choose not to open your eyes when asked to do so or you have suffered a medical problem unrelated to the hypnosis.  In the event of a medical issue, I will call an ambulance for you and alert your next of kin that you have been taken to hospital if you have previously agreed to this.

If you do choose to fall asleep then please note that I charge by the hour! 🙂

Will I have to keep talking about my childhood or my past?

Not unless you want to.  Whilst regression can be useful in certain circumstances, this is not my preferred method of treatment.  Whatever has happened in your past cannot be changed and so there is no real point in repeatedly going over it.  What we need to do is understand where you are now and where you want to be in the future.  This means we can get to work straight away, helping you take control of your life and move forward to a better place.
